Then call someone a few states over and tell them your name is PJ Swindell.

Point is, do some research on your own talking to people in the trenches.
Low blow.
B24 … I’m assuming the producer takes the cash for the trips, in that case they can be considered compensation.  Being taxed on them is normal however most companys will “gross you up” so you don’t have to pay out.

Have to disagree on the LP part.  Although it's an investment it's only one that can be had by being a Jones employee and is not open to everyone.  To me it would be an extra layer of compensation that would not be there if I was not a Jones employee.
If you take the cash, it's like 2K per trip.  If you are producing 300K, that amounts to 1.3% in additional net (for two trips).  Something, but not much.    As far as LP, I will agree that the 20% average returns over the past 30 years is tough to compete with, but after taxes, it's more like 12-15% (the returns are 100% taxable as income).  For higher producers, it's even worse.  Where it is fantastic is if you accumulate a lot, and then use it as income in retirement.  But it's a small % of people where this is the case (long-term advisor, produced a lot, acquired a lot of LP, and retired with the company).  There is nothing wrong with that, you just have to have a very long-term perspective.

I agree, that was a low blow.  I’m just mad no one is picking up the damn phone today.  My appologies.

I would take the trip anyway. The cash payout sucks and if you qualify for the trip then you should be making more than enough to be comfortable after taxes and you get to enjoy some sweet trips from what I hear. More than 50k net in 6 months would do me just fine (if you dont factor in the sliding scale given to new fas the first 3 years to meet trips eligibility)

If the only research I was doing was asking a bunch of anonymous people on a message board then I would probably make a lousy salesman.

Ok my son, what have you learned from your other efforts?

Although, there’s a better chance of getting the truth here than in person or over the phone. And everything posted here is subject to the scrutiny of about 20 other people who know as much…Can you imagine if he called Windy to ask what he made his first year?

Hey Look!!! I’m a Senior Member!!!

Please note nothing was given to windy.  He earned it all.  He made sure his RL knew his numbers every two weeks and that he was posting better numbers than most Seg. 3s.  That's why he now has an office.

No, not unless they’re in the same region.  Even then you have to know who’s dot is who’s on the regional screens.

Aug 31, 2009 9:19 pm

Spiff, as long as you’re here what are the differences between MAP and Advisory Solutions?  MAP is individual securities wrap and Advisory Solutions is asset allocation based mutual fund portfolio wrap from what I’ve gathered?  If I’m going to be in the Jones discussion I might as well understand the terminology =)

Aug 31, 2009 9:37 pm

BB, you are correct.  Advisory Sol is MFD and ETF wrap program, MAP is a standard SMA program.  But “wrap” would be the wrong term for the MAP program.

Next time let me know we are competing and let’s put a few beers on the line to make it fun.

If it’s a pure gross competition I think you’ll win since I’m putting people in AS and C shares and your objective is a bit different.

Spiff’s seen my performance. He know’s i’m not lying. Whether anyone wants to believe it or not. I only posted them on the other thread to piss off Volt, since he said he would beat me.
Aug 31, 2009 10:12 pm

DJ, why don’t u just post a screenshot on ur photobucket page?

And in all fairness how much did each of you bring in in auc and individual account openings? Since Volt is hung up about the disadvantage of advisory… although he may be killing you as the years go on since he will have a head start with gross rolling in.

Aug 31, 2009 10:16 pm

I don’t think Volt wants to play that game with DJ right now.  Not this month at least.

Volt - not to be a jerk, but you've got a long row to hoe if you're using C shares and Advisory at this point in your business.  I know a lot of Seg 2 and 3 guys who only use it as a last resort because, like you said in a different post, you need to feed your family.  You may very well win in the very long run with that strategy, but the question is how long will you be here to play the game?  You're a smart guy, so I'm sure you'll figure out the balance.
Sep 1, 2009 12:24 am

I’m sure Windy is doing just fine - his results don’t piss me off.  I’m not in competition with him, only my personal goals.

Spiff … EDJ was kind enough to provide me with a salary for the first year.  I know exactly what I need to pay my bills and eat a few decent meals.  So, with regards to gross … does not matter to me.  I’m going to keep pushing as many dollars as I can into AS and C shares until that salary runs out.  Those dollars will provide me with a cushion in years to come.  At year 5 if me and you both started at the same time, bringing in the same assets.  You selling A shares, me selling AS and C I’m beating you in gross. You should rethink your strategy.

My goal in this business has never been to make the most money, to be the biggest producer.  Even now I work less than many of my peers.  It’s simply to get my business up to 175k net per year and prop my feet up.  Windy and many others have different objectives, I respect that.  I’ve spent the last 10 years in corporate America rising to the ranks of Sr. VP (youngest in a fortune 100 company), working 80hr weeks, and now understand work/life balance.  To each their own.

Is Wind bragging about his numbers again? Volt - I personally think your approach is the best. That’s going to stand you in good stead.
