I’m not sure I understand why people are saying this is the wrong field. People come from all walks of life. Hell, Jones hires mobile home salespeople that end up being top producers.
Very true. However, they enter this job with the " I'll do whatever it takes attitude."
Wrong field for you
Also true.
If I were drawing an 80K pension (and presumably health benefits too) and had a decent network to draw from, I would either start my own RIA or go to Jones (if I wasn't comfortable enough on my own). I would not go the wirehouse route - too much stress to bring in assets. At Jones, if you come in with a viable plan for bringing in assets, you will do fine, and live a very stress-free life - especially if you don't have to worry about income. The other problem with the wires - it sounds like this guy might need to fish around with some small accounts (firemen), and that does not work well in the wirehouse world. For him, I would only join an existing RIA/indy firm if they are going to train him. No sense getting a reduced payout unless you get something in return. I know a few guys in my area that work like 15-20 hours a week as indies and make over 100K per year. That's what this guy needs. No sense killing himself at this stage.
