Hi Dr_McGill,

Setting up an RIA can definitely be challenging given the documents required.  It's important to understand compliance and what is needed to get you through approval - and afterward.

I am a compliance consultant that assists advisors in setting up their new RIA and guiding them through the registration process with the SEC or State.  I am a former regulator and have years of experience in the industry, including on Wall Street.  I assist with the establishment of the compliance program and the required documents of the new RIA.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions on your set-up and I would be hapy to provide assistance.

Thanks for offer, but im slowly putting this together, trying to keep expenses out of the equation at first.  Although when this grows to a multi billion dollar ria id love to keep the compliance people that helped me get off the ground. :) If you'd like to give put a little help in this scenario let me know.

Hi Dr_McGill,

Completely understandable.  Many start-up RIAs try and minimize expenses and I totally get that.  Additionally, compliance is one of those areas in all firms that is an expense and non-revenue-generating, however it's so important to be compliant and to have the proper documentation in place not only during the registration process, but in the event of a regulatory examination subsequent to approval.

I sent you a PM with a couple of suggestions on your specific state (OH) requests.  Every state is different and I didn't want to confuse anyone by responding to your specific state publicly, since other states/SEC have more or less requirements for registration.  Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can provide any assistance!

Hello Dr_McGill, I’m in the process of going through RIA registration through my state in the new few weeks and like you I’m minimizing the expenses by submitting many of the forms myself . How was the experience? Can you provide suggestions on the do’s and don’ts during the registration process? Thanks!
