When the inevitable question comes up: "So, what do you do for a living?" how do you respond?  I agree that it is good to tailor your approach depending on whom you are speaking with, but what if you had no idea what the person's occupation, lifestyle, etc was?

What works best for you guys?

No seriously now.....do you want to tell the truth or fabricate some cache sounding speil?

Truth goes something like this:

I talk to lots of strangers, most of whom don't want to talk to me and try to convince them to give me all their money so I can invest it for them.

Cache sounding Spiel:

I help folks realize financial sucess and peace of mind by acting as a personal financial coach and mentor.  Together we draft a roadmap and drive the long winding road of providing for retirement or whatever financial goals are most important to them.

I help clients like you avoid taxes, increase income, fund college, grow and preserve wealth, while protecting your income,by utilizing certain quantitative and qualitative asset management techniques designed by my firm to help you reach and achieve certain and specific financial goals, on a fee basis. I can meet you and your wife at your house tomorrow night from 5 to 9, or would the next night be better?Where are you going? Come back!

Seriously though, I like Harry Pappass' (multi million dollar producer with Smith Barney) approach:

I'm in the investment business- I manage money for for people.

Short, concise, easily intrigues them to volunteer information.

Amen.

I talk to idiots all day long

I like menotellname's reply since it invokes an open-ended response.  I think that as long as you can get folks to open up and start talking about their financial concerns it should (in theory) create the opportunities necessary to get them to fill out the new account forms, and in turn, get us filling out patriot act documents for the rest of the day

Thanks, and I'm anxious to hear some more as well!

Wabsters (for copyright purposes not to be confused with Websters) New World Financial Dictionary defines Financial Planning as: “The Strategic Reallocation of Assets into Fees and Commissions”.  Tell people your a Strategic Reallocator.

So Noggin, you bend them over your confrence table and you get paid for it......

Noggin must be related to Doug "3Mil" Hill, he likes to bend them over for a thrill  while he takes his little blue pill...........

I respond with: Well, What are you doing to plan for retirement?

Then, based on their response, I taylor my answer to their response.  I always try to get in the prospects mindset before answering.  Because, I have found, that if I just respond with babble, I lose some people.  I'd rather have a simple answer taylored to the prospect.

Having a bad day?  He gave an honest, decent response that indicates his client list is exclusive.  I liked it.

The best one that I’ve heard is:

“I help affluent investors become wealthy investors.”
