Sports memorabilia is a lucrative niche in the collectibles market. A recent Heritage Auctions sale of uniforms, bats and balls by legends of the field and court raised a total of $5.95 million. Among the highlights: Lou Gehrig’s 1927-28 game jersey which sold for $717,000, and a signing check from the New York Yankees for Mickey Mantle which went for $286,800, or thirty times its pre-auction estimate.
