How many ETFs are there now? One gazillion, covering nearly every sliver of the investible universe. Okay, I kid but, in 2009, asets in ETPs (eschange traded products) grew by 50 percent. There are more than 600 equity ETFs alone. Well, turns out, "the number of exchange-traded products (ETPs) on ETF Deathwatch climbed again this month to 146 (110 ETFs and 36 ETNs). This is a 9.8% increase from last month and the largest quantity since fourteen months ago when the count stood at 150," according to Ron Rowland, president of Capital Cities Asset Management, an RIA in Austin. CCAM has identified 146 products on its ETF Deathwatch for August that "failed to generate at least $100,000 in average daily dollar volume, or average daily value traded (ADVT), during the past month."
