The New York State Tax Commissioner has followed the federal government's lead and issued guidance extending the April 15, 2020, tax filing due date to July 15, 2020, for New York state personal income tax and corporation tax returns.
The extension applies to returns for individuals, fiduciaries (estate and trusts) and corporations taxable under Tax Law Articles 9, 9-A and 33. Taxpayers can defer all related tax payments due on April 15, 2020, to July 15, 2020, without penalties and interest, similar to the federal rule.
Taxpayers who can't file their return by July 15, 2020, can request an automatic extension to file by October 15, 2020. Interest, penalties and additions to tax will begin to accrue on July 16, 2020.
Those who already filed their 2019 returns and scheduled a direct debit payment will not have those payments rescheduled. If taxpayers would like to delay payment, they must cancel and schedule a new direct debit payment.
