Dan Drummond, the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards’ spokesman for the past 10 years, is leaving the nonprofit organization to start his own communications firm in Fairfax, Va. Commonwealth Public Affairs is a full-service strategic communications firm, focused on storytelling as a strategy that will help its clients advance their goals.
Drummond’s responsibilities will be absorbed by interim Communications Director Terry Poltrack and communications specialist Karen Grajales, as well as outside public relations firm Bliss Integrated Communications.
Drummond was hired by the CFP Board in June 2010, with responsibility for the strategic direction and implementation of the organization’s external communications program. He also led the group’s public awareness campaign, a multimillion-dollar advertising and public relations blitz to bring attention to the CFP mark. He also oversaw the CFP Board’s Consumer Advocate and Ambassadors programs.
In recent years, the organization has made an effort to improve its appearance. Last year, the organization took steps to extend a fiduciary duty to all financial advice given by CFP holders to clients. It also created a group to focus on the diversity of the designation holders.
Prior to joining the CFP Board, Drummond held positions at communications firms Powell Tate and Burson-Marsteller. He was also previously communications director for Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) and a journalist.
