Auction houses had an unprecedented week of sales.
Many have surely seen the news of David Hockney smashing (by nearly double) the record sale price at auction for a living artist when his painting “Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures)” sold for over $90 million at Christie’s on Thursday.
However, that was but one story from a huge week for fine art auctions. Ten different pieces eclipsed $25 million hammer prices just this week, and Hockney’s $90 million haul wasn’t even the highest figure among them.
