I posted a message like this in the rookie section but wanted to post here as well.

  Do you guys think it's better to try and set a meeting on the first cold phone call?  If so what has worked for you?

To me, that’s the entire purpose of the call.  Try to get a meeting first, but if it doesn’t seem like it will happen, then go to plan B and work on the follow up.

When I cold called, I asked on the first call if I could send some information.  If they said yes, I went for the appt on a call next week.  If they said no, they got dropped from the list.  Asking to send info was a “soft close” in my opinion and I did have success with that.
