Where does everyone get their leads lists from?  The majority of my list is the wrong number, disconnected #, dead people.  I am just starting out and I have been cold calling for two weeks now and my contact ratio 10:1; for 10 calls I make, one is actually the person on the list, and most of the time they just have up, so for 100 calls I am talking to 10 people and 5 our hanging up right away.  To me this sounds like a bad ratio, is this common?  I know it is a numbers game and you have to grind it out, but I just want to make sure I am being the most productive with my time, any ideas,

Mooose - do yourself a favor.  Put away the list.  Go to the nearest business district and introduce yourself to everyone.  I promise that you'll have better results in a couple days of that than you will the cold calling.  Out of 100 businesses, you'll hand your card to at least 100 people.  Get their cards while you're there.   Send them a thank you for your time note.  THEN call them.  I promise you'll set more appointments that way.

When I'm out in a residential neighborhood my average is 1 out of every 5 houses someone is home, 5-7 short conversations per hour.  I'll get two or three quality prospects every time I'm out.  I only go for a couple hours at a time these days, but you can go as long as you can stand it.  It's much more fun than pounding the phone too.
