Our cover this month, Another Place by Frank Avray Wilson, sold for $7,321 at Bonhams Modern British and Irish Art auction on Dec. 16, 2020 in London. Wilson is credited as Britain’s only action painter—a style of painting in which one spontaneously throws or splashes paint onto a canvas rather than carefully applying it.
Wilson’s science background (he studied biology at the University of Cambridge in England) and his embracing of vitalism were the primary influences in his art; he viewed the process of making art as the art itself, rather than the final product. His work was featured in various galleries throughout London, Brussels and Paris. Unfortunately, Wilson cut his art career short following the tragic death of his young son. Instead, he turned his focus to writing and research.
Another Place, the image on our cover this month, is a testament to the abstract style in which Wilson painted and leads one to wonder if biology was the influence for this blood red rendering. Fittingly, we all hope that this year our world will be another place—a calmer place for that matter—with a COVID-19 vaccine rollout now in progress, a new administration in Washington, D.C. and other changes that have occurred in the year since the onset of the pandemic.
