Wine might emerge as a bona fide alternative asset class. Established in 2004, the London International Vinters Exchange Ltd. (aka the Live-ex index) tracks the price movements of 100 fine wines and is calculated monthly. Over the first six months of the year, Live-ex gained 9 percent, while the S&P 500 lost 13.7 percent. And last year, the Live-ex gained 42.2 percent, while the S&P 500 only gained 3.5 percent.
