Fifteen states now have domestic asset protection trust (DAPT) statutes. Some commentators thought that these statutes would be limited to less populated states, but with Ohio entering the DAPT arena, this assumption proved incorrect. While the history of asset protection trusts is fairly brief in the United States, beginning with Alaska in 1996,1 it’s anticipated that many more states will adopt asset protection statutes.
