Dimond Center, Anchorage
Anchorage's Dimond Center was built over an ancient native Alaskan burial ground. Although the construction crew turned up several small graves, but because they were small and few, the development wasn't stopped. Today, it's reported that the ghosts of the area's first inhabitants appear suddenly in front of lone shoppers in the mall's smaller hallways and restrooms.
Pike Place Market, Seattle
Pike Place Market was built in 1907 over a native American sacred site, and the ghost of an elderly Indian woman is often seen wandering the market at night just after closing. In addition, the market's popular bead emporium is said to be haunted by a small child. In fact, during market renovations, it is said that a basket of beads--one from each year of the store's life--was uncovered behind a wall to which there had been no access
Safeway, San Francisco
The Safeway downtown between 17th Ave. and Taraval has been reported by both customers and employees to be haunted by a boy between the ages of 7 and 10. He has been seen, sometimes clearly like a living person and sometimes transparent and smudged looking, sitting in the midst of crates near the restroom with his head down, hugging his knees, and walking slowly toward people down a long hallway. The building may have been constructed on the site of a former mid-century motel that burned down due to its owner's problems with finances, but that doesn't explain the little boy's spooky presence.
Toys R Us, Sunnyvale
The ghost of a young Swedish farm worker called Jonny Johnson (pronounced Yonny Yonson) is said to have been photographed at this store. When the workers report in the morning, they find toys left out, including bicycles, and balls roll across the floor for no reason during the day.
Northshore Mall, Peabody, Mass.
This mall is more than rumored to have been built on a grave--just step outside of Macy's and you'll see one. Inside, several spirits have supposedly been sighted between Macy's and JCPenney after hours when only the movie theater is still open.
Harrisburg Mall, E. Harrisburg, Pa.
When the JCPenney store closed, the trouble started. Security guards reported seeing someone on the roof and looking at them through the store's glass doors, and said they often experienced feelings of doom and felt as if they were watched and breathed on. Now that Boscov's has taken over, no ghosts have been reported, but don't let that stop you from hunting for some. Why should a ghost favor one brand over another?
CherryVale Mall, Rockford, Ill.
In the 1970s, this large mall opened as one of Rockford’s first, and has remained popular ever since. But while it’s full of life during the day, it’s another place entirely when the shoppers are gone. Numerous hauntings at this mall have been reported by lone shoppers and employees alike. Both have reported hearing strange voices and feeling like they are being followed. Employees say they’ve seen hangers moving on their own along racks, items moving on shelves and clothes suddenly falling off displays. Even worse, people have claimed to have been blocked in a restroom stall by an invisible force, and employees report returning in the morning to the store they closed and cleaned the night before only to find it in disarray.
Kmart, Mt. Pocono Mall, Mt. Pocono, Pa.
One night, two of Kmart's overnight employees, stationed in completely separate areas of the store, saw the same ghost: a young woman in a long flowing, white dress. She even called one of them--David--by name twice. In other odd incidents, employees have found feminine products suddenly knocked off shelves, folded clothes tossed into disarray, and signs suddenly falling from the ceiling.
John T. King's Rare Books, Detroit, Mich.
At this bookstore, workers began reporting lights turning on by themselves, and hearing doors slam and footsteps a few decades ago. The store’s ghost grew infamous enough to warrant an investigation in October 2013 by Metro Paranormal and Scientific Paranormal Investigations, local ghost-hunting groups. According to proprietor John K. King, the hauntings began when items belonging to a woman who committed suicide were brought into the store and kept on the third floor of the building. However, he says, everything went back to normal as soon as the last of her belongings was moved out. But Scientific Paranormal says the place is still active. One of the firm’s psychics picked up on a name in a basement office, which turned out to belong to someone who had worked there and passed away a few years ago.
Walmart, Oxnard, Calif.
This Wal-Mart’s toy department is home to the ghost of a seven- to nine-year-old Mexican-American girl. She has braids, wears a blue dress and bounces balls, laughs and smiles at employees. There is a rumor that the little girl was murdered in the field where the Wal-Mart was later built, but this fact has yet to be researched. In the meantime, though, you can find footage of the little girl on YouTube.
Barnes & Noble, Crystal Lake, Ill.
Because Crystal Lake, Ill., was settled in 1836, it’s hardly surprising that the small city (population: 38,000) has a high number of reports of paranormal activity. And one of its most famous ghost stories has to do with the local Barnes & Noble. The land on which the bookstore now stands was owned by a woman who died there and left it to a local church for the building of a school. A bookstore is not quite what she had in mind, so, as many Barnes & Noble employees report, the old woman appears in the bookstore, and books and book carts are seen moving on their own.
Santa Anita Mall (Westfield Shopping Center), Arcadia, Calif.
A little boy in early 1930s knickers has been found playing with toys at KB Toys and looking with awe at the escalator in Macy's. When discovered, he suddenly turns transparent or he runs away without touching the floor.
KMart Store #7625, South Los Angeles
This Kmart was once a Zody's store, and, as the story goes, when it was still Zody's, a double murder/suicide took place in its upstairs stockroom. According to legend, a boyfriend and girlfriend worked together at Zody's. One day, the boyfriend found his girlfriend in a compromising position with another male employee, found a box cutter and slashed them both to death. He then took his own life by cutting his own wrists and carotid artery. A ghost has been seen in the stockroom along with a girl running, and screams have been heard, but they're not the worst stories. An overnight worker once sustained a 7-in. laceration on his chest. Management said it was caused by boxes falling, but the victim said it came from a paring knife mysteriously flying through the air and cutting him. He resigned. Kmart HQ in Michigan was spooked enough by these claims that the company hired a paranormal investigator, who concluded that there are four spirits haunting the building. While the first three of them are known, the fourth has yet to be seen.
