People in 23 states searched for information on income taxes, more than any other financial issue last year. TermLife2Go speculated that the high level of interest likely stemmed from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which fully took effect in 2018’s returns for the first time.

People in 10 states were more interested in insurance than any other topic, and this interest was highest throughout the Sun Belt. It’s possible that high levels of retirees in some Southern states could lead to more curiosity about life and health insurance information.

People in nine states searched for mortgage information more than any other financial topic. As the survey notes, four of the top 10 fastest-growing states had mortgage information as the top topic; with an influx of new residents, interest in mortgages is likely to spike, as well.

College was the most popular term in four states. Affordability may drive Massachusetts’ interest; a 2015 analysis found the state to be one of the 10 most expensive states to attend college. A private nonprofit school costs $40,748 per year, the highest average in the country.

New York was the only state where estate planning was the most popular financial topic in Google searches, according to TermLife2Go; the survey speculated this could be partially due to the fact that more millionaires reside in New York City than any other place on the planet.
