TD Ameritrade is building an open source coding library to “identify patterns and anomalies in time series data,” the company announced today. Called STUMPY, it is available on Microsoft's GitHub.

The open source project, the company’s first, is a “new opportunity” for the firm, which has been using open source strategies since the early 2000s, according to the firm. TD Ameritrade Institutional’s Veo One, for example, is built on the principle of an open platform that allows advisors to connect different tools they use in their practices with TD Ameritrade.

This project, however, is being made available to the developer community to support “time series data mining tasks,” such as pattern and motif discovery, optimizing similarity searches and density estimation in data sets. STUMPY was developed by TD Ameritrade’s Exploration Lab, a dedicated exploratory technology team within the firm, along with the Open Source Program Office.

“I am thrilled that TD Ameritrade has made its first contribution to the open source community,” said Vijay Sankaran, chief information officer at the firm. “We see this community as a source of innovation, and we are excited to see how developers outside of our organization can evolve the ideas that we’ve introduced.”
