Uncertainty, distrust, polarization: These are the sentiments that played out on a grand scale in 2017. Crossing the political, environmental and personal divides, last year left many unsettled.

Concepts of trust and security were seriously challenged by calls of “Fake News” and multiple hacks of private information. Political leaders traded insults within and across party lines, while many feared a new Cold War with Russia and conflict with North Korea were in the offing. Irma and Harvey brought flooding and destruction, and Napa and Sonoma burned. White nationalists came out of the shadows; anti-immigrant and racist rhetoric flew.
