A Gift for the Beloved Pet

A sure way to thank your advisor for all their hard work is to send something special for their fur baby. And there’s no peeking allowed. According to Martin M. Shenkman, an attorney in Fort Lee, N.J., “I won’t let the little guy open it until Christmas Eve.” I guess we’ll have to wait to find out what it is.
A Jar of Honey

This gift seems quite popular this year. At least three board members said they received jars of honey. According to Jewish tradition, honey is consumed on Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) to bring in a ‘sweet new year.’ Perhaps clients have applied this old adage in hopes of ushering in a better 2017 after this circus of a year.

Another interesting choice, board member Avi Z. Kestenbaum, partner at Meltzer, Lippe, Goldstein & Breitstone on Long Island, N.Y. and in New York City, received one of these with the explanation that the client wants him “around and healthy for his grandchildren.” That is, the client’s grandchildren (presumably to help with administration of the client’s trust, but also a nice way to wish someone a long, healthy life). A win-win for the client and the estate planner.

Another thoughtful gift idea is cookies or other sweets, from an organization such as Baking Memories 4 Kids, which donates the profits from its delicious cookies to help send kids with life-threatening illnesses to Florida amusement parks.
The Godfather Notebook

Christopher P. Woehrle, associate professor of taxation at The American College of Financial Services in Bryn Mawr, Penn., received this recently published edition of Francis Ford Coppola’s notes and annotations on The Godfather novel, the story behind one of the most iconic films. Woehrle says the story is, in part, a good example of a succession plan gone wrong.
A Gift to Charity

Elizabeth K. Miller, founder and head of Summit Place Financial Advisors in Summit, N.J., says that her company makes a donation in honor of every client to a charity of choice each year. This year they chose UTeach Institute, an innovative university-based teacher preparation program working to increase the number of qualified STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) teachers in U.S. secondary schools.
A Rock

One client must have been stuck between a rock and a hard place when trying to figure out what gifts to buy. A. Todd Angkatavanich, partner at Wither Bergman LLP in New Haven, Conn., says he received one as a gift this year. Perhaps there’s more meaning than we know.
Customized Appointment Book
Even though we’re in a digital age, sometimes we find comfort in a good old-fashioned organizer. A great way to keep track of client meetings and the kids’ extracurricular activities, alas with a personalized touch, such as the At-A-Glance Weekly Appointment book Kim Kamin, principal at Gresham Partners LLC in Chicago, recently received.

For those looking to give something a bit more luxurious, Kamin told us she also once received this elegant deck of cards. Practical, especially for those slow days at the office.
