In terms of daily activities - number of dials, door knocks, contacts, appointments etc., -what should someone be shooting for in their first 3 years in the business ? What numbers allow you to go home at night with a sense of accomplishment regardless of commissions?

25 real contacts.  Doorknocks, phone calls, appts, ftf, whatever.  A real contact would be a meaningful conversation where you develop relationship, ask for order, appointment, etc.

I used to use a point system, for example: 1 point for cold call where I talked to someone 5 points for face-to-face (doorknock) 20 points for having an appointment, seminar, speaking engagement, etc..... I just pulled these numbers out of my $#@.  I don't remember my actual scoring system.  You should come up with your own system.  I wanted to get to 100 points per day, although I think I focused more on the per-week goal.
