Eating Your Losses

Last year, between ranching and working as a full-time advisor with D.A. Davidson in Great Falls, Mont., Skip Halmes wrote a collection of stories titled The Cow Whisperer. In it, he details his travails with ranch animals, his children and a balky digestive tract. Halmes says the steers have lately been easier to deal with than the market. At least with the cattle, you can always eat them.
