Less turmoil, Please

Clients tell advisors they're looking for portfolio products that dampen volatility.

Investors have had their fill of volatility and are communicating their displeasure to their FAs, an annual advisor sentiment survey sponsored by Curian Capital shows. More than 1,000 independent FAs in the December poll indicated their investors want change; 79 percent of advisors said clients wanted more conservative investments, up 10 percentage points from a survey taken a year earlier. Demand for other investment techniques that were viewed as less risky or apart from the stocks-bonds universe also were in greater demand. Just 3 percent of advisors said they had more than 25 percent of their AUM allocated to alternative investments, for example, but 60 percent said they plan to boost their use of alternative asset classes this year.
